Lake Beresford Park, Deland, FL-Wild Boar Encounter

When we hike in a relatively urban environment like Lake Beresford Park in DeLand, FL we don't really think in terms of dangerous wildlife. But - you should be aware that they are there. The other day I hiked the "lake" trail just past the railroad underpass. About 3/4 of the way around that very nice loop, I heard some noise and it was "more than a squirrel." I spotted it and it was a wild boar. When he spotted me he ran! I think that will usually be the case unless they feel cornered. So just be aware of your surroundings as you enjoy the great outdoors here in Florida. Carry a good stick and/or pepper spray if you want, just as a precaution.

DeLeon Springs State Park

This "Skunk Ape" greeted us from the water access to DeLeon Springs State Park the other day. We put in at Tedders Fish Camp and headed into the park, but you can also rent canoes and kayaks inside the park. Head for Spring Garden Run for great wildlife viewing. (Get good directions across the lake before you go.) We wrote up this area in our book, 25 Kayak & Canoe Trips in East-Central Florida last year on page 29. Longleaf Pine Preserve - Caution!

We wrote up a six mile hiking trail for this preserve in our recent book. And that writeup is still good. http://rogerfulton.com/ecotours/FLBooks/hikeflorida.htm. But, on the same preserve there is also a BLUE Trail that purports to be an 11 mile hiking/biking loop trail from the east entrance off Pioneer Trail to the west entrance off Route 44 near Deland, FL. DON'T do it! About 6.7 miles out it becomes impassable due to water, even in this drought season. It's not even mowed and, even if you could make it past the water, there is the danger of losing the trail. So stick with our 6 mile recommended hike or bike trail.

Compromised compasses - Warning!

To all of my outdoor friends - A basic compass has probably saved us all from a night in the woods over the years. But in the last two years I've had no less than three of them get compromised. Couldn't figure out why. Then, this past Sunday, while conducting a nature tour with the Schwerdfeger Family in Florida, we discussed the issue. Seems that about two years ago I started carrying a Faraday flashlight in my survival kit. That's the kind you shake to get light. Mr. Schwerdfeger, who teaches orienteering classes, advised me that they have heavy duty magnets in them that can influence, or even demagnetize a compass. Bingo!!! I've always carried a backup compass in my survival kit, along with the flashlight. I'll be keeping them seperate from now on! How did I get to be this old and not figure that out? :-) Hope you also learn from this. Enjoy the great outdoors - safely!

Co-author Susan Young just sent us a warning about canoeing/kayaking in Florida during alligator mating season - now! She warns that the drought has driven more gators into smaller water spaces. In one area of Payne's Prairie, they are shoulder to shoulder in a recent photo she sent us. (We tried to get it to you here, but couldn't, so take our word for it.) Seldom does an alligator bother a kayaker, but you might want to stay in the "less crowded" water areas during gator mating season. Meet Susan Young - My Co-author in Florida

I teamed up with Susan Young last year to do our book, 25 Kayak & Canoe Trips in East-Central Florida. She was a wealth of information and took the lead in writing that book. But we never really introduced her.

Susan Young is a Florida native who is an award-winning freelance outdoor writer, photographer and illustrator. Susan has hiked, paddled and fished all over Florida since the 1970's. She has been published in some of the most prestigious publications in Florida, and beyond. She is a member of several professional writing organizations and she's a graduate of Florida's Master Naturalists program.

And, she has become a good friend!

Ocala Nat'l Forest - Bears

Yes, there are Florida Black Bears in the Ocala National Forest. This year we spotted large amounts of scat as we hiked to write our upcoming book on the trails of ONF. But toward the end it got even more real as we found this fresh track in the sand. That's my hand; but the bear's footprint. We never saw a bear, even hiking about 120 miles through the forest, but they ARE there! Luckily, they are generally nocturnal and docile and will easily run from you most of the time- OKAY!

Hiking Ocala National Forest

We're done! Today, we reached the Rodman Trailhead, the end of our treks in the Ocala National Forest. We have hiked more than 115 miles of combined trails along the Florida National Scenic Trail and other trails within the forest this winter. We biked another 19.6 miles in the forest. The pic is of co-author Susan Young (right) and our dedicated shuttle driver Bobbie Tartaglino (left) at the end of the trail.

Thanks to them and all of our fellow hikers and bikers we met along the trails.

Florida Trail - Ocala National Forest

As we continue our treks through the Ocala National Forest, we encountered this interesting sign near the Eaton Creek Parking Area, just off Route 314. Seems we have to worry about a variety of critters in this area including, bear, deer, horses and people. Wow, this is dangerous work, but somebody has to do it!!!

We're about 85% done with our research on all of the hiking and biking trails of the Ocala National Forest. We'll be done with our research by the end of March if all goes well. The book will be out in time for the Snowbirds to buy it in October of this year. we'll keep you up to date at:

Nature Walks - Lake Woodruff National Wildlife Refuge

Our Sunday afternoon nature walks have been VERY popular during January and February. We've averaged about 22 people every Sunday. We see 25-35 species of wildlife during our 1.5 mile tour of the refuge. Sponsored by the West Volusia Audubon Society, in conjunction with the Friends of Lake Woodruff National Wildlife Refuge, we have decided to continue the Sunday afternoon tours, 3-5 pm, through the end of March. This Blog is the ONLY notice that will be posted; no outside advertising of these tours, so the March groups can be smaller. Florida Trail - Ocala National forest

We are still heading north on the Florida National Scenic Trail. Today we toughed out the longest segment of the trail through the Juniper Springs Wilderness area. We would have cut it into two segments, but there are no roads through this 8.8 mile segment of the Florida Trail. If y'all want to do it, be prepared!

We survived the 8.8 mile trek in good spirits; just a little tired. :-)

Ocala National Forest - Hiking Warning!

Today we hiked a 4.3 mile section of the Florida National Scenic Trail from Farles Lake to Forest Road 30. We encountered several "Rainbow" people who are camped in that area. The ones we encountered were mostly "stoned" on drugs. One young man we encountered who was armed with a big stick, and his girlfrind with a club, warned us that there were some "very bad kids" on the trails and repeatedly asked if we knew where we were going. Then he ranted about heroin, filthy dirty people and our safety. The U.S. Forest Service has clearly lost control of this area!

Either avoid this section of the Florida Trail or travel in groups.

Otherwise, it's a very pretty area to hike through, but not worth your life.

Night Hike at Lake Woodruff National Wildlife Refuge.

On February 19th, under a nearly full moon, we'll take you out into the wilds of the refuge at night. We'll find out about critters and things that may go "bump in the night" on the refuge. It is free and open to the public but you must pre-register by calling the refuge at 386-985-4672. We’ll meet at the end of Mud Lake Road in DeLeon Springs at 7 pm on that date. Master Naturalist and author Roger Fulton will be one of the guides and will lead the 1.5 mile casual walk which will last until about 8:30 pm. It is sponsored by the group, Friends of Lake Woodruff National Wildlife Refuge. Space is limited. Don’t get turned away. Call to register today. Any problems, my cell phone is 386-956-6089.

February 12th - Safe in the Woods. - 1 pm - A Powerpoint presentation on how to stay safe while enjoying Florida woods and wetlands. Lake Woodruff National Wildlife Refuge in Deleon Springs, FL - at the Learning Center on Grand Avenue near Mud Lake Road. By Roger Fulton.

February 19th - Night Hike at Lake Woodruff National Wildlife Refuge. Under a nearly full moon, we'll take you out into the wilds of the refuge at night. It is open to the public but you must pre-register by calling 386-985-4673. Ask for the time we'll start. Roger Fulton will be one of the guides.

Our Sunday Audubon bird and wildlife tours are continuing every Sunday 3-5 pm until, at least, the end of February. We MAY conitue them through the end of March if we have adequate attendance. We have a 60 power scope to help you view the wildlife of the refuge.

Every Sunday in February the Friends of Lake Woodruff National Wildlife Refuge would like to meet you and tell you about our wonderful national treasure in your own backyard. Therefore, here is their offer:

Refreshments will be served by the Friends of Lake Woodruff each Sunday in February between 2:00-3:00 (February 6, 13, 20 and 27) at Lake Woodruff National Wildlife Refuge Nature Center prior to a nature walk presented by master naturalist Roger Fulton. Roger's nature walk begins at 3:00, starting at the parking lot at the end of Mud Lake Road, and runs until 5:00 pm. Both the meet and greet and nature walk are free and for the public. The Nature Center is located at 2045 Mud Lake Road just off Grand Avenue in DeLeon Springs. Call 386-985-4673 if any questions.

Lake Woodruff National Wildlife Refuge - tours

Every Sunday in January and February of 2011, from 3-5 pm we will be conducting FREE guided tours of the Lake Woodruff National Wildlife Refuge with a 60 power wildlife spotting scope. This free service is sponsored by the West Volusia Audubon Society and the Friends of Lake Woodruff National Wildlife Refuge. Bring yourself, your family and your friends. Everyone is invited. We generally see at least 25 different species of wildlife including birds, gators, turtles and other interesting "critters". We just completed our first tour in the series this past Sunday. Heron vs. Armored Catfish

At Route 44 on the St. Johns River we encountered a very determined Great Blue Heron who had captured what we call an Armored Catfish. Seems the catfish was both too big, and perhaps too armored for this small heron. But it WAS entertaining for about 15 minutes. We never did see the final outcome, but our guess is that the heron finally won out. And I'm glad to be entertained by nature in Florida, rather than the Northeaster and 60 mph winds in New York. Thanks for letting me share your state for a few months.

Whooping Crane Migration - and me

My two day trip to Florida was fraught with dangers, (other motorists), weather problems and unexpected problems along the way. The Whooping Cranes had all of the above, without the luxury of Days Inns, hot showers and DOT cleared highways. But then they were led by a person in an ultra-lite aircraft dressed as a Whooping Crane. I had to find my own way!

I am now in Florida and ready to hike the trails of Ocala National Forest for my new book. Anyone interested in joining me on my outings, afternoons and evenings?

Biking in Florida last week

It was a short trip to Florida last week. But enjoyed some sunshine, warm weather and friends. In this photo, Realtor Ed Sherman and I enjoyed biking at Lake Woodruff National Wildlife Refuge. Saw a "bunch" of wildlife, got some exercise and enjoyed the day. Photo by Arnette Sherman, also a realtor, who rode with us.

FYI - LWNWR as we call it, is a few miles west of Daytona Beach and is just one of the 25 biking trail locations in our Central Florida biking book. It is a wildlife refuge with 450 acres of managed ponds for migratory birds and other wildlife. It's well worth your time to go there and hike, bike and enjoy it and its wildlife. The Friends of Lake Woodruff NWR run a Nature Store at the Headquarters on Mud Lake Road in DeLeon Springs, Florida. And we just got notified that they already have our new CFL Kayaking book on their shelves! They are apparently the FIRST retail store to carry it in Florida.

Their Nature Store is stocked with a wide range of nature and wildlife-related gifts. The nature store is a book lover's delight. Think of the store when you are looking for gifts for yourself or others. All proceeds from store sales help with Friends' projects around Lake Woodruff National Wildlife Refuge.
From November through June the store is open from 9 am to 5 pm, Monday through Saturday, and on a non-scheduled basis the rest of the year. Because the store is volunteer operated, it is best to call before coming in to be sure the store is open -- 386-985-4673.

Gemini Springs bike trail

The Spring to Spring trail out of Gemini Springs near DeBary has been expanded and now goes all the way to Lake Monroe. Our book, 25 More Short Hikes and Interesting Walks in Central Florida carried it as a walking trail before the new improvements. Now it has been expanded and is a very nice biking trail as well. One advantage of kayaking is that you get to see things others may not. Susan Young was recently on a kayaking trip in the Silver Springs area of Florida and encountered this family of monkeys. It is estimated that more than 1500 monkeys live in the wild in Florida.

Lake Norris kayaking

On Sunday, 14 members of the FPTA (FL Paddling Trails Association) paddled several miles around Lake Norris. This quiet, scenic habitat is managed by the SJRWMD and the LCWA. The only public access is a tiny hand-launch leading to a 20-minute paddle up Blackwater Creek to the lake. The dwarf cypresses around the lake are currently hosting several osprey nests and an egret rookery.
This interesting kayaking/canoe venue is one featured in our upcoming book of 25 Interesting Canoe/Kayak Trips in the Daytona Beach/Orlando Area of Florida. It is at the editor's right now. Look for it on our webpage this fall.

Recently got this pic of a gator in Florida from Chris Friesen in DeLand, FL. It's mating season for these guys so I recommend you stay clear of them for the next few months. Getting "up close and personal" takes on a different meaning this time of year.

These boys are only motivated by food and sex; and you don't want to be involved in either one of those activities! :-)

Okay, so the sign says "Foot Traffic only." Well that's not quite right, and the sign will be changed soon. The impound dikes of Lake Woodruff National Wildlife refuge are open to off-road bikers. I hiked the Flagler Trail today near Oveida, Florida. Air temp was 35 degrees. But, the good news is that the sleet had stopped by late morning. It's going down to 25 degrees tonight in DeLand. And this photo of a very chilly Screech Owl seeking shelter in a garage comes to us from Susan Young of Deltona.

I think Al Gore has lost his momentum!! Global warming??? I don't think so! And neither does this owl.

Lake Woodruff National Wildlife Refuge

On an unusually frigid Florida Sunday 1/3/10, several of my good friends braved the cold weather to go on a wildlife/birding hike at Lake Woodruff National Wildlife Refuge in DeLeon Springs, Florida. Despite the cold we spotted several species of birds, and a good time was had by all.

I will be conducting these tours, hopefully in warmer weather, every Sunday from 2-4 pm throughout January. It's a free trip through Audubon, so stop out and join us.

Hudson River kayaking and foliage

We spent the afternoon on the Hudson River out of the Sherman Island Boat Launch. (It's in our Lake George kayaking book.)

While there we found Ken Burl of Corinth out enjoying the day and his Hornbeck boat. We had heard and read about the Hornbeck's but Ken displayed his for us with a beautiful backdrop of fall foliage colors.

Payne's Prairie Cousins

We've highlighted the bison herd at Florida's Paynes Prairie near Gainsville in the past. But we never had a big bull stop traffic there.

This is what we encountered recently on a trip to South Dakota. This old bull thought he owned the roadway. And for a few minutes, he did!

We think he is a distant cousin of the Florida herd. He'll be in touch over the holidays.

Florida's State Butterfly

Most Florida residents don't know their state symbols, so we thought we would start to present them on this Blog.

The zebra longwing became the state butterfly in 1996. It is common in South Florida, especially in the Everglades National Park. However, it is not common in North Florida. This black and yellow butterfly is known for dining on the sweet nectar of passion flowers.

Bicycling in Florida

We wondered if bicycling is truly a dangerous sport in the U.S., or is it fear-mongering by the media? So we did some research.There are roughly 80 million bike riders in the U.S. who bike, at least 6 times a year.
Now, look at what that is in terms of zeroes. 80,ooo,ooo,ooo.And our calculator can't handle that number. And in 2007, roughly 700 bike riders died, nationwide. Even if it was 800, you do the division if you can on your own calculator. The precentage is miniscule. Unless you, or your loved one, was one of those.
About 540,000 bicyclists sought treatment at Emergency Rooms in 2007. And 67,000 of those had head injuries. One-half of all injuries were persons under 16 years of age.
So, our conclusion is that if you bike, be careful. And, wear a helmet. Other than that, go out and enjoy bicycling; both on and off road, wear a helmet, and get older than 16.

Two of my friends travelled to the Alligator Farm in St. Augustine today. Chris Friesen took more than 300 photos on the day, but is particularly proud of this Toucan photo. Seems there was actually a barrier between him and the pretty bird. Shows the degree of his photo expertise.

Yearling Trail, etc. Reopened

From Deb Blick of FTA,

The Florida Trail within the Juniper Prairie Wilderness, the Yearling Trail, and the Juniper Canoe Run have reopened. These recreation areas were closed during the Juniper Fire which started on March 10, 2009. Forest Service personnel canoed Juniper Creek Canoe Run and hiked the Yearling Trail and the Florida National Scenic Trail yesterday and deemed them safe for visitors.

Juniper Springs Wildfire

For those of you who might not be aware yet, there's been a BIG fire burning since last Wednesday in the Juniper Prairie Wilderness Area of the Ocala National Forest. There have been periodic closures of SR 19 and SR 40 due to fire supression efforts and heavy smoke.
As of this morning the fire had burned a little over 10,000 acres and was 85% contained.

The Yearling Trail from our NE Florida Hiking book, and the Pat's Island Trail from our CFL Hiking book are currently closed.

Clark Bay Conservation Area

Today we hiked a 5 mile trail through this conservation area to check out the newly cleared and remarked trail. We found it to be relatively well-marked and very clear. Takes you through reforested areas and some pine plantations. In the 85 degree heat, it was still a good trail.

It is just outside of Deland, FL on the Old Daytona Road off of Route 92.

This trail is scheduled to be included in a future book, but thought you might enjoy it now.

Oh yea, this Gopher Tortoise will be your host, cracked shell and all. Perhaps you can bring him a little more out of his shell than we could.

Owlets - Lake Ashby Park

We took this picture of owlets today at Lake Ashby Park in Central Florida. You may have to click on the pic to see the four big eyes looking back at you, but it'll be well worth it.

Lake Ashby Park is hike #12 in our book 25 More Short Hikes and Interesting Walks in Central Florida.

So stop by the Lake Helen Book Fair between 10-2 on Saturday the 7th, pick up a copy, and then follow the directions to Lake Ashby to see the owlets. If you buy a book, we might even tell you where those cute critters are hiding.

Our friend Phillip Wright snapped this pic of a wading bird at Orlando Wetlands Park today. We have identified it as a Sora. It is a highly secretive bird that hides at the edges of grasses on canals. It is in the Rail family. Check it out in your guidebooks. Double click on the photo for a better look.

We think this guy is an Anaconda. :-) Huge! Maneating methinks! :-)

If you attended one of our Safe in the Woods programs last month, you would know how to handle a close encounter of this kind.

Well, okay, he was only a couple of feet long and pretty harmless. Encountered him (or her) last week on the Longleaf Pine Preserve.

I'm back in NY, but had a great 6 weeks down in Florida. Thanks to everyone!

The Yearling Trail

We just checked out this trail today to check its condition. It appeared in one of our last books, 25 Short Hikes and Interesting Walks in Northeast Florida as Hike #17.

It is in good shape. Side trails could use a little better marking, but we made it back from this 3.9 mile round trip outing. Took about 2 hours. Beautiful day!
